A message from SSSI General Manager, Roger Buckley:

RogerBf2.jpgAs the General Manager of SSSI it is my pleasure to welcome you to the SSSI Website.  With the merger of SSI and ISA nearing completion it is important to note that SSSI has nearly 3000 members with this number growing daily.  2010 has all the markings of a great year for our industry and organisation, and this year has already seen the great success of The XXIV FIG International Congress 2010 held in Sydney from the 11 – 16 April 2010 http://www.fig2010.com/. We will also see the 15 Australian Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Conference being held in Alice Springs from the 13 – 17 September 2010 http://www.15.arspc.com/  both these events will put our industry in the spot light.

As our foundation year has new been completed I would like to provide you with some statistics that you may consider worthwhile:

• Staffing of all key positions within the Head Office and the provision of more member services to regions
• Introduction of a structured approach to CPD, implemented the SSSI policy and launched the CPD online system;
• Negotiated international organisations MOUs with likeminded organisations– Chartered Institution of Civil Engineers UK, URSIA and the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors;
• Hosted the XXIV FIG International Congress in Sydney attracting over 2200 delegates;
• Established of a range of working parties as part of the governance model of the Consultative Council;
• Appointed  a dedicated Marketing and Communications Officer , National CPD Coordinator and Events Coordinator;
• Introduced a new look Geo message generated to members on a fortnightly basis;
• Upgraded and release of the SSSI Membership database for member access;
• Implemented a new migration assessment process and policy with DEEWR for assessment of Surveyors;
• Overhauled and implemented new IT services;
• Overhauled the SSSI Website;
• Continued with a strong focus on good Governance at the Board and the Consultative Council  level; and
• Promoted SSSI Regional Staff Profiles to members.

As you can see from the above list as an organisation we have a lot to celebrate,  I believe that we have achieved a great deal and that we are moving from strength to strength and in the right direction.  With the strong Governance framework set up by the Board and the working parties and sub committees of the Consultative Council, our strategic vision to be a dynamic, independent and influential learned professional organisation that operates at local, national and international level is well on its way to being achieved.

I would invite new membership applications to join our professional association to ensure a strong voice in the surveying and spatial sciences arena, membership is the key to our success and I assure you that the staff of SSSI  are here ready and willing to provide you with great customer service.  SSSI offers people working across the diverse nature of the surveying and spatial sciences industry a professional home.  Whether you work as a remote senser, a photogrammetrist, a cartographer, a GIS consultant, a hydrographic, land or engineering surveyor, you will find your professional and technical needs are catered for.  In particular, professional certification is offered or is under development for all commission streams, and a wide range of professional development seminar and conferences are offered annually throughout the regions.

I will be working particularly hard to identify SSSI priorities and directions with the Board and already a number of these have been raised at the Board Planning day held in Sydney recently.  Achieving the right balance with this direction, coupled with the competing priorities and resources, pressures from Regions/Commissions and Groups and demands from members, and trying to do the “right thing” for the future sustainability and development of SSSI, may not always be easy, and we need to work together on a partnership model that is sustainable.

I look forward to building on the solid ground that the organisation was created on, providing a mutually beneficial partnership arrangement with our sustaining partners and establishing a sound financial model for sustainable and continued growth.  Let me know if there are any things that you think should
be a top priority to for us to help SSSI to grow.

Kind regards,

Roger Buckley
General Manager, SSSI
